Possible Locations for a UT Southwerstern Medical Branch
Three sites near the University of Texas' School of Nursing have been pointed to as possible future locations of a medical school. The locations, on UT campus, are located near the University Medical Center, which could allow collaborative opportunities for in patient research and care.
Decisions are expected to be made on which location to use within the next 2-4 months, according to the UT System Board of Regents. Establishing a branch of the state's prestigious Southwestern Medical Center in Austin is creating a large amount of excitement.
The locations consist of a parking lot near the Erwin Center, a wooded area that is cater-corner from UMC, and a parking area on the corner of MLK Jr. Boulevard and Red River Street. A fourth possible location is next to the Dell Pediatric Research Institute.
Both sites closest to UMC are under compelling consideration. John McDevitt, professor of biochemistry and chemistry, has praised the value of a hospital within walking distance University researchers.
Cost is a major concern and one of the reasons why UT Southwestern has yet to commit to the branch campus. The costs of construction and establishment are set in the hundreds of millions.
