The first students of the Macon-Area Vocational Technical School got enrolled in 1966. In 1987, the name of the institution changed from Macon Technical Institute to Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) in order to display the image of a region that serves seven counties, including Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe, Putnam and Twiggs. Five years later, Associate of Applied Technology (AAS) degrees were approved by the State Board. Finally, in 1999, the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited their Associate degrees.
The institution has a Health Technology division that includes a long list of varied programs related to the field. This department embraces 10 different kinds of technologies. Each one of them is subdivided into their corresponding programs which are Cardiovascular Technology; Dental Hygiene; Medical Assisting, which encloses diplomas, certificates and associate degrees (A.S.) in areas like medical coding, medical reception, medical skin care specialization and medical transcription; Medical Laboratory Technology, which includes phlebotomy; Orthopedic Technology; Paramedic Technology; Pharmacy Technology, Practical Nursing, which offers certificates in Direct Support Professional, Hemodialysis Patient Care Specialization, Patient Care Assisting, and Polysomnograpy; Radiologic Technology and Surgical Technology.
All individuals willing to go through the HT admission process must undergo a background check or a drug screening based on clinical/medical requirements. In addition to that, those who complete the Health Technology Core and keep up a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 or more will have preference over the rest of the individuals. The College works hard in order to enhance the well-being of the students while preparing academically in CGTC. Therefore, they offer a wide-ranging list of student services such as Counseling, Library, Food Service, School Newspaper, Public Telephones availability, Health Services and Safety, among others.
